Habits of Successful People

Many people in our society today want a quick fix to everything. Lose 20 pounds in a month, get rich quick schemes, cryptocurrency is the way to making millions. The list goes on and on. Successful people don’t seem to waste their time with the latest fads and internet advice. Instead, they apply simple principles that pay dividends when done consistently over time. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits has a lot to say about getting 1% better each day. You can read his thoughts on marginal gains here

Highly successful people read a lot. Many successful business people and world leaders have long stated the transformative power of reading daily. Most commonly their books of choice include nonfiction, however, reading of any genre is beneficial. Reading can be linked to an increase in empathy, a larger vocabulary, and broad knowledge across fields. While more and more people around the world can read and access text, fewer and fewer people are reading deeply.  Author Tony Robbins said, ”Years ago I got hooked on a habit that turned out to be one of the most valuable of my life: reading at least 30 minutes a day. Jim Rohn, one of my teachers, told me that reading something of substance, something of value, something that was nourishing, something that taught you distinctions, was more important than eating. ‘Miss a meal,’ he said, ‘but don’t miss your reading.’ Remember: leaders are readers.”

Successful people are also generous. When we think about generosity, we often think about money. While giving away money for the benefit of others is definitely generous, this is not the sole mark of a generous person. Generous leaders give away their time, their knowledge, and their connections. Have you ever met someone who guards certain connections or knowledge? This is the opposite of how successful people interact with their friends, colleagues, and employees. Successful people invite others in and operate from an abundance mindset versus a scarcity mindset. The scarcity mindset says that the resources are limited, it’s a zero-sum game. Whereas the abundance mindset sees endless opportunity.

Great leaders and people consistently set goals. They develop short and long-term goals and make them happen. The goals are specific and measurable. How do you know if you slept more? Create goals that are easy to track. Will you be in bed every night at 10 pm?  This specificity allows you to monitor if you hit your goal today or missed the mark. Setting goals in the workplace is one of the best ways to keep the main thing at the center. It’s pretty easy to determine if your team will take on this project if you have a goal for your company or team. Without it, you may end up spending time doing things professionally and personally that doesn’t move you closer to your goal.

Being a highly successful person may seem out of reach at times. Remember to start small and be consistent.
