Performance Evaluations

Organizations typically do regular evaluations to discuss performance, career path and opportunities for improvement. These evaluations serve as documentation of an employee’s performance and also assists in helping the company make employment decisions. Evaluations also help determine if an employee has earned a raise or promotion. There are many things to take into consideration when doing an evaluation and ways to help you prepare for these.

    • Prepare for employee evaluations. This allows you as the evaluator to discuss all the specifics and having the facts in front of you during the time you have with your employee. This will also allow you as the evaluator to anticipate any questions that may arise from the employee.
    • Evaluate the employee’s performance based on their specific responsibilities and tasks that have been assigned to them. Keep in mind to be specific in what you are evaluating and what your expectations are off them.
    • Contributions to the company should be discussed during this time. Let the employee know how they have contributed to the company’s performance. If there has been no contributions from that employee, this is the time to bring these concerns up.
    • Employee feedback allows the person to speak about any questions, concerns, contributions or any means about their evaluation that may have been overlooked or went unnoticed. This also allows the employee to feel engaged during the evaluation.
    • Set future goals for the employee. Let them know what you would like to see from them in the coming time until their next evaluation. Employees like to have something to strive for as it allows them to feel that they are contributing in some way to the company.
    • Give raises as needed to employees who deserve them. As we know, raises boost the employee’s morale, encourage hard work, and increase employee satisfaction. This also contributes to retaining good employees!
